Author: Christie Perez

Many people do not realize that eating healthy foods ensures that your skin stays healthy too. After all, the skin is the largest organ in the body so it makes sense if you think about it. Many of the old sayings our mothers told us are true - like drink lots of water because it will help your skin and make you look younger. If only, we had listened! But it is never too late to start caring for your skin and ensure that it functions effectively.

The skin has a big job to do in clearing away all the toxins in the body, so if you are stuffing yourself with unhealthy foods, it is inevitable that your skin will suffer too. The trick is to eat nutritious foods that will help to keep your body and your skin as healthy as possible. A healthy diet will ensure healthier skin by eating the following foods:

• Water - Your mother was right - you should drink a minimum of six glasses to eight glasses of water per day. If you are more active, then you should increase that amount. Water will not only hydrate the skin, but will also flush out toxins while it assists the skin cells by adding nutrients to the skin.

• Berries and Other Fruits and Vegetables - Antioxidants are abundant is fruits such as plums, blackberries, blueberries or strawberries. Beans and some other vegetables also contain antioxidants that will protect the skin.

• Protein - Meats are high in protein, along with other foods like peanut butter, flaxseed, nuts and beans so if you are a vegetarian you will still be able to get enough protein. Your body weight and the amount of activity will determine how much protein your body should have.

• Whole Wheat - A dieter is familiar with the benefits of whole wheat, but what you probably don\'t know is that it contains the mineral selenium that promote healthy skin cells. It is therefore beneficial to those who have sun damage to their skin. Whole wheat can be found in rice and cereal as well as bread.

• Green Tea - For thousands of years, green tea has been used as an anti-inflammatory, plus it will reduce damage that has been caused by exposure to the ultraviolet light from the sun. Green tea can be applied directly to the skin or you can drink it.

• Essential Fatty Acids Found in Salmon, Walnuts and Canola Oil - These three foods are rich in essential fatty acids that help the skin to retain moisture. They will ensure that the skin cell membranes remain healthy. If your skin is dry, it needs more fatty acids.

By increasing your intake of all of these foods and drinking lots of water, you will ensure that your skin stays healthier and your body too.
