We spend so much time taking care of our face that we sometimes forget about our hands.
Then one day you look down and think, “Wait… when did my hands start looking like this?”
The skin looks thinner. Maybe you notice a few dark spots. Your hands feel dry and rough, especially around the knuckles. And no matter how much lotion you put on, they still don't look as smooth as they used to.
The good news? You don't need a fancy hand routine or a bathroom full of expensive products.
A few simple habits can make a big difference.
1. Don't skip sunscreen on your hands
This is probably the biggest one.
Most of us remember sunscreen for our face, neck, and maybe our arms. But our hands? We wash them all day, so sunscreen is easy to forget.
And your hands get plenty of sun exposure while you're driving, walking outside, gardening, or just doing your everyday stuff.
So when you put sunscreen on your face in the morning, rub some onto the backs of your hands too.
If you're going to be outside for a while, reapply it, especially after washing your hands.
It sounds like a small thing, but doing it regularly can help protect your hands from sun damage and those dark spots that tend to show up over time.
2. Keep a hand cream nearby
Here's the thing about hand cream: if it's hidden inside a cabinet, you're probably going to forget about it.
Put one somewhere you actually see it.
Keep it beside your bed. Put one near the kitchen sink. Keep one in your bag if you want.
Then use it after washing your hands, before bed, or anytime your hands feel dry.
You don't have to slather it on every five minutes. Just make it a habit.
And if your hands are really dry, look for a thicker cream rather than a super-light lotion.
3. Don't forget your cuticles
Your cuticles can make your hands look dry and neglected even when the rest of your skin is fine.
You don't need to do anything complicated.
Just massage a little hand cream or cuticle oil around your nails before bed.
That's it.
If your cuticles are constantly dry or cracking, give them some extra attention instead of picking at them.
4. Be careful with really hot water
I know. Sometimes a hot shower or washing your hands under really hot water feels amazing.
But your skin may not be a fan.
Very hot water can leave your hands feeling dry and tight, especially if you're already dealing with dry skin.
Try using warm water instead of piping hot water when you can.
Your hands will thank you.
5. Give your hands a little extra moisture at night
Nighttime is a great time to do this because you're not constantly washing your hands afterward.
Before going to bed, put on a good layer of hand cream.
If your hands are super dry, you can put on cotton gloves afterward. You don't have to do this every night. Even a few times a week can become a nice little self-care habit.
And honestly, there's something nice about waking up with soft hands instead of that dry, tight feeling.
6. Don't go crazy with scrubbing
If your hands feel rough, you might be tempted to scrub them hard to get rid of the dry skin.
Don't.
Being too rough can irritate your skin and make the problem worse.
If you want to exfoliate, keep it gentle and don't overdo it. Your hands don't need to be scrubbed until they're red and sore.
Sometimes what they really need is just moisture and protection.
7. Pay attention to what you use around the house
Cleaning products, dish soap, and other household products can be pretty rough on your hands.
If you're washing dishes or cleaning for a long time, consider wearing gloves.
Yes, it's not exactly glamorous.
But neither is having dry, cracked hands afterward.
A simple pair of gloves can help keep some of those harsh products from sitting directly on your skin.
8. Don't ignore those dark spots
As we get older, it's common to notice more uneven color or dark spots on the backs of our hands.
Sun exposure can play a big role.
That's another reason sunscreen matters so much.
If you notice a spot that is new, changing, bleeding, itching, or just doesn't look right, don't try to treat it yourself with some random cream you found online. Have a dermatologist take a look.
It's better to get something checked than to keep wondering about it.
9. Take care of your hands the same way you take care of your face
Here's the part many of us forget.
Your hands are exposed to the same world your face is exposed to. Sun, wind, water, soap, dirt, cleaning products… all of it.
So why give your face moisturizer and sunscreen every morning while your hands get absolutely nothing?
You don't need a 10-step hand routine.
Just remember these three things:
Protect them from the sun.
Keep them moisturized.
Be gentle with them.
That's a pretty good place to start.
And don't expect overnight changes. Your hands didn't change in one day, so give your routine some time.
The goal isn't to make your hands look 20 years old again.
It's simply to keep them looking healthy, cared for, and soft for as long as you can.
